Teval, the Balanced Scale

Druid Tribal : Discover the Hidden Secrets of Nature

If you like to create a massive army of Druids and harness the power of nature, then Druid Tribal is the right deck for you. Let’s see how we can discover the hidden secrets of nature.

I love tribal decks because they combine synergy and flavor and of course power. On top of that you can find many unique cards that support a tribe and can be great budget options as those cards work only on a specific tribal deck and are bad to unplayable to any other deck. That’s why I will try building and presenting a series of decks for all those who share the love for tribal decks.

Druid is a creature class and the primary green spellcaster. The first card with the type was Citanul Druid from Antiquities, but Alpha ‘s Ley Druid, Llanowar Elves and Verduran Enchantress gained the type retroactively. Druids, like clerics, are masters of magic that are powered by faith, often backed up with combat prowess. They are “nature priests” and mostly green-aligned. Druids are strongly tied to plants, animals, fertility, the element of earth, and the land about them. (source: MtG Wiki)

Along with the release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, came Sultai Arisen, a Sultai () colored commander deck focused on Graveyard and Zombie Druids. It is a great starting point for building Druid Tribal. Although you can call it a precon upgrade, my build is more a precon remake than an upgrade so you can start from zero and buy singles. The optimal building option depends on the price and availability of the cards.

Teval, the Balanced Scale

Teval, the Balanced Scale is the face commander of the precon and a great commander for Druid Tribal. He is a 4/4 Spirit Dragon with Flying which make him great for attacking, while at the same time, on attack trigger, we mill three cards and may return a land card from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped, making it an excellent ramp engine. In addition whenever  one or more cards leave our graveyard, we create a 2/2 black Zombie Druid creature token, making him an amazing Druid Token producer. A great option for Druid Tribal!

Although there are some other cool options for building Teval, the Balanced Scale (focusing more on reanimation, Mill, Lands matter, etc.) our build will focus more on Druids while at the same time we’re also taking advantage of the best cards that synergize with our focused strategy since with Teval, once we fill our graveyard and start recursion, we’re getting optimal synergy and great card advantage and ramp.

Synergy Diagram

Druid Tribal Synergy Diagram

Let’s analyze the main goals of the deck:

  1. Add the best Druids. Our priority is to add the ones that have synergy with graveyard recursion, synergy with Mill and Druid Tribal synergy.
  2. Add Druid Tribal support. Cards that support Druid Tribal seem a great choice for our build.
  3. Add cards that produce Druid tokens. Since we are trying to build a great Druid army, cards that produce Druid tokens are great for our build.
  4. Add cards with graveyard recursion and cards that remove cards from our graveyard. With Teval, the Balanced Scale whenever one or more cards leave our graveyard, we create a 2/2 black Zombie Druid creature token, so we can quickly generate a Druid army.
  5. Add Land recursion cards and cards with Landfall synergy. With Land recursion we get amazing ramp plus Druid tokens (with Teval).
  6. Add cards that synergize with our strategies. To make the best out of our strategies, we can further amplify them by adding cards that support many of our strategies.

For the sake of flavor some of the choices are not optimal, but are (usually budget friendly) alternatives that fit greatly the Druid Tribal theme.

Druid Tribal Comparative Analysis by category

As we see form the comparative analysis, the rates per category are very good. There is no score below the optimal low average while we notice extreme spikes in graveyard recursion and ramp. We see 4 categories that are above the optimal max average.

Deck Highlights, synergy and flavor options:

Ramp

Teval, the Balanced Scale is our commander and a reliable ramp engine, as it fills our graveyard and recurs Lands from it.

Teval’s Judgment is one of the best cards for our Druid Tribal, as it is flexible and can act as a ramp engine, a draw engine and a Druid token production engine. With multiple cards leaving our graveyard, it can be all of them at once. A top pick for our build.

Will of the Sultai is another flexible card that can act either as ramp or as a potential finisher. If we control our commander it can be both. As ramp, it can return all land cards from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped. Another top pick for our Druid Tribal.

Conduit of Worlds is an artifact that let us play lands from our graveyard. A great ramp engine for every green graveyard deck.

Kheru Goldkeeper works wonder with our graveyard recursion strategy as it has “Whenever one or more cards leave your graveyard during your turn, create a Treasure token”. It can be a ramp engine and a combo material. A great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Skull Prophet is a Druid that can be used either as a mana dork, or to fill our graveyard. Great synergy with our Druid Tribal.

Springbloom Druid let us sacrifice a Land to search our library for up to two basic land cards and put them onto the battlefield tapped . Great synergy with our Druid Tribal, as we can also recur our sacrificed Land with our graveyard recursion strategy and further amplify ramp value.

The Gitrog Monster is card that greatly fits our Druid Tribal as it allows for Land recycling (along with our graveyard recursion strategy) that eventually creates more Druid tokens with Teval, the Balanced Scale, while at the same time it become a draw engine. A great pick for our build.

Shigeki, Jukai Visionary has potential to become a repeatable ramp source, while it can also help us with Graveyard Recursion too. By paying , and returning it to our hand, it let us reveal the top four cards of our library and put a land card from among them onto the battlefield tapped. In addition, we put the rest into your graveyard. By filling the graveyard, we can later take advantage of its Channel ability, by paying and discarding a card, we return X target nonlegendary cards from graveyard to our hand. A great addition to our Druid Tribal.

Floral Evoker is a Druid can grow big with Landfall but also has great synergy with our Druid Tribal as by paying and discarding a creature card at instant speed, we can return target land card from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped.

Seton, Krosan Protector is a Legendary Centaur Druid that is a top tier pick for Druid Tribal as it turns all our Druids into green mana producers. By tapping an untapped Druid we control at instant speed, we add . He is also one of the most popular Druid Tribal commanders too.

Molt Tender is an Insect Druid that has high synergy with our Druid Tribal as it can either help us fill our graveyard, or to exile a card from our graveyard at instant speed to add one mana of any color. Its second ability triggers Teval, the Balanced Scale so we get optimal value from it!

Hedge Shredder is an Artifact Vehicle that has high synergy with graveyard decks as whenever one or more land cards are put into our graveyard from our library we put them onto the battlefield tapped. Powerful ramp and it can also be crewed for just 1 to become a 5/5 artifact creature until end of turn that whenever it attacks, we may mill two cards. A top pick for every graveyard deck that cares about land recursion.

Insidious Roots turns all creature tokens into mana producers, by giving them : Add one mana of any color. An amazing ramp source for our Druid Tribal. Moreover, it has Graveyard Recursion synergy, as whenever one or more creature cards leave our graveyard, we create a 0/1 green Plant creature token, then put a +1/+1 counter on each Plant we control.

Titans’ Nest can help us with topdeck manipulation and filling our graveyard, while it let us exile a card from our graveyard at instant speed to add , an ability that also triggers Druid token creation from Teval, the Balanced Scale. Great synergy for our Druid Tribal.

Coiling Oracle is a Snake Elf Druid that help us with a great ETB ability that leads either in ramp or in card advantage. Great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury is a Legendary Planeswalker that with +2 creates a 1/1 green Elf Druid creature token with : Add . That alone would be enough to include her in a dedicated Druid Tribal, but she does much more. By -2 we destroy target artifact or enchantment, while her ultimate at -6 let us draw a card for each green creature you control. Great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Jaheira, Friend of the Forest is an amazing card for our Druid Tribal. It turns all our Druid tokens into mana dorks. A powerful ramp option and I love the fact that she fits the flavor too. A true friend of the forest! Khalid would be proud.

Kagha, Shadow Archdruid is an Elf Druid that whenever she attacks, she gains deathtouch until end of turn and we mill two cards. Moreover, once during each of our turns, we may play a land or cast a permanent spell from among cards in our graveyard that were put there from our library this turn. Great synergy with our graveyard strategy and a great pick for our Druid Tribal.

World Shaper on death trigger returns all land cards from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped.  In addition, it help us fill our graveyard by milling three cards whenever it attacks. A great ramp source for any green graveyard deck.

Crypt of Agadeem is a powerful Land as it can be an amazing ramp sourse for every black graveyard deck. By paying , at instant speed, we add for each black creature card in our graveyard. Great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Target Removal

Fangkeeper’s Familiar and Mystic Snake are counterspells on a stick. That way we can recur them and cast them again and again. Mystic Snake is a classic and seems more powerful as it counters every spell, while Fangkeeper’s Familiar counters only creature spells, but it is versatile and can also destroy target enchantment or let us gain 3 life and surveil 3. Both are great options in our Druid Tribal that has a strong graveyard recursion strategy.

Awaken the Honored Dead is a Saga with great synergy with our build as it synergizes with many of our strategies At I we destroy target nonland permanent, at II we mill three cards and at III we may discard a card to return target creature or land card from our graveyard to our hand. A great pick for Druid Tribal and also a flavorful one.

Druid Lyrist is a Human Druid that by paying , and sacrificing it at instant speed, we destroy target enchantment. Has great synergy with our graveyard recursion strategy as it may become a repeatable removal.

Druid of Purification is already a powerful artifact/enchantment removal option in commander and being a Druid with an ETB does only makes it better, as it may become a repeatable removal. A great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Drag to the Roots is a powerful instant removal for graveyard decks, as it has Delirium — This spell costs less to cast as long as there are four or more card types among cards in our graveyard. So most times we would be able to cast it for just and destroy target nonland permanent which is great value.

Board Wipes

Death Begets Life is a powerful board wipe that destroys all creatures and enchantments while we draw a card for each permanent destroyed this way. The only drawback is its high mana cost, but that should not be a big problem in our Druid Tribal with our extreme ramp strategy. A great inclusion for our build.

Crippling Fear is a great budget mass removal for tribal decks as it can clear the board of our opponents while leaving ours intact.

Graveyard Recursion

Life from the Loam is a great card for Land recursion to our hand and also has Dredge 3 so it helps us Mill. A great utility card that fits our Druid Tribal.

Memorial to Folly is a land with graveyard recursion synergy, as by paying , and sacrificing it at instant speed, we return target creature card from our graveyard to our hand. A nice inclusion to our Druid Tribal.

Gravecrawler is Zombie that can recur itself again and again, something that triggers Druid token production of Teval, the Balanced Scale. It also is a great combo material. A nice inclusion to our Druid Tribal.

Cursecloth Wrappings is both a Zombie Anthem buffing Zombies with +1/+1 and a graveyard recursion engine. On , it gives target creature card in our graveyard embalm until end of turn. The embalm cost is equal to its mana cost. A great card for our Druid Tribal, as our Druid tokens created by Teval, are also Zombies.

Phyrexian Reclamation is a staple for graveyard recursion decks for a good reason: by paying and paying 2 life at instant speed, we return target creature card from our graveyard to your hand. A great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Ripples of Undeath is a top tier card for our Druid Tribal. It help us fill our graveyard at the beginning of our precombat main phase, by milling three cards. Then if we pay and 3 life we put a card from among those cards into our hand. A must-have card for our build, as synergizes both with our graveyard recursion strategy and can trigger Druid token creation of Teval, the Balanced Scale each turn.

Colossal Grave-Reaver is another huge card for our Druid Tribal. Both on ETB trigger and on attack trigger it let us mill three cards, but its true power comes from its last ability: “Whenever one or more creature cards are put into your graveyard from your library, put one of them onto the battlefield”. That is bonkers in any Golgari graveyard build and our Druid Tribal has a quite strong ramp and graveyad recursion to ensure we will be able to play it early and get optimal value. With a 7/6 body and Flying, it almost ranks as a finisher too.

Lost Monarch of Ifnir is a great inclusion for our Druid Tribal as our Druid tokens created by Teval, are also Zombies. It has Afflict 3 and gives other Zombies Afflict 3 which punish players that block our Zombie Druids by loosing 3 life for each blocked creature, something that may be a hidden finisher if we have a big Zombie Druid army. Moreover, it is another repeatable recursion engine as it has: “At the beginning of your second main phase, if a player was dealt combat damage by a Zombie this turn, mill three cards, then you may return a creature card from your graveyard to your hand”.

Muldrotha, the Gravetide is such a powerful card that can flood us with value. During each of our turns, we may play a land and cast a permanent spell of each permanent type from our graveyard. Amazing for ramp, graveyard recursion, card advantage and almost everything. A top pick for our Druid Tribal.

Kotis, Sibsig Champion is a graveyard recursion engine that can easily turn into a big threat with our strong graveyard recursion strategy. Whenever one or more creatures we control enter, if one or more of them entered from a graveyard or was cast from a graveyard, we put two +1/+1 counters on Kotis. Its first ability “Once during each of your turns, you may cast a creature spell from your graveyard by exiling three other cards from your graveyard in addition to paying its other costs”, synergizes with the second one, so it may quickly grow into a threat.

Victimize is one of the best target graveyard recursion spells for graveyard and sacrifice builds. By sacrificing a creature, we can return two target creature cards in your graveyard to the battlefield tapped. A great fit for our Druid Tribal since it also triggers the Druid token creation of Teval, the Balanced Scale.

Meren of Clan Nel Toth is one of the best and most popular Golgari commanders for being a master in graveyard recursion. Of course she can also works great in the 99 of our Druid Tribal, triggering consistently the Druid token creation of Teval, the Balanced Scale and she gets stronger the more experience counters we have. A top inclusion to our build.

Six is a great addition to our Druid Tribal since it is a low mana cost Treefolk, that gives nonland permanents in our graveyard Retrace as long as it is our turn. On attack trigger we mill three cards and we may put a land card from among them into our hand so it help us fill our hand with lands and it becomes a grave recursion engine that can consistently trigger the Druid token creation of Teval, the Balanced Scale.

Living Death is one of the best mass graveyard recursion spells for graveyard and sacrifice builds. A nice pick for our Druid Tribal.

Oversold Cemetery works wonders in our Druid Tribal as it can easily return target creature card from our graveyard to our hand at the beginning of your upkeep (as long as we control four or more creature cards in our graveyard). A free recursion each turn can really help our build shine.

Deadbridge Chant works wonders in Golgari graveyard decks as on ETB we mill ten cards and it is a great recursion engine. At the beginning of our upkeep we choose a card at random in our graveyard. If it’s a creature card we return it to the battlefield, otherwise we return it to our hand. A great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Dakmor Salvage is a land that has Dredge 2 so it greatly helps fill our graveyard if needed. A nice pick for every graveyard deck.

Deeproot Historian is an amazing Merfolk/Druid Tribal grave recursion machine as it gives all Druid and Merfolk cards Retrace. A great pick for our build and a great tribal card.

Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler at -2 let us mill three cards andy return a creature card with mana value 2 or less from our graveyard to the battlefield. It is also a combo material in our Druid Tribal, as he let us activate abilities of creatures we control as though those creatures had haste. A great inclusion for our Druid Tribal.

Turntimber Sower is an Elf Druid with great mill synergy as whenever one or more land cards are put into our graveyard from anywhere, we create a 0/1 green Plant creature token. In addition by Sacrificing three creatures at instant speed we return target land card from our graveyard to your hand. Also synergizes with Avenger of Zendikar and Insidious Roots. Nice pick for our Druid Tribal.

Tortured Existence is one of the best utility cards for our Druid Tribal. By paying and discarding a creature card at instant speed, we return target creature card from our graveyard to your hand. Perfect both for filling our graveyard and for recurring our best creatures. In addition, we are easily able to trigger the Druid token creation of Teval, the Balanced Scale, gaining multiplied value. It is trully a key card for our build.

Graveyard Hate

Selesnya Eulogist is a Centaur Druid that works both as a graveyard hate card and as a great token producer. By paying we exile target creature card from a graveyard, then populate. This ability synergizes well with the Druid token creation of Teval, the Balanced Scale as we can get 2 Zombie Druid tokens per trigger. A great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Bojuka Bog is a staple for graveyard hate.

Tutors

Lotuslight Dancers is a great tutor for Sultai graveyard decks as on ETB it tutors a black card, a green card, and a blue card into our graveyard.

Waterlogged Teachings is a nice instant/card with Flash tutor that greatly helps our build consistency. Speaking of cards with Flash, our counterspells on a stick are a great target. Being a MDFC means it can also be played as a color fixing land. A great pick for our Druid Tribal!

Protection

All our counterspells also act as protection spells too if needed and that is very important since with our build focusing on both Druid Tokens and Druid creatures we should have a strong board presence.

Card Draw

Welcome the Dead works wonders in our Druid Tribal, as it offers us both card draw and Druid token generation, while at the same time it has graveyard synergy. We draw two cards, then discard a card and we lose 2 life. Then we create X tapped 2/2 black Zombie Druid creature tokens, where X is the number of cards that were put into our graveyard from our hand or library this turn. A top pick for our build.

River Kelpie reward us whenever a permanent enters from a graveyard and whenever a player casts a spell from a graveyard by drawing a card. Moreover, it has persist, so it is hard to be removed and it also synergizes with itself drawing us a card when it is self-recurred. Great synergy with our Druid Tribal build as it becomes a draw engine.

Kishla Skimmer let us draw a card, whenever a card leaves our graveyard during our turn, but it triggers only once per turn. A great inclusion in every Sultai graveyard recursion build.

Tatyova, Benthic Druid is is a great addition for every Landfall deck as it acts as a draw engine while it also net us life. She is also a Merfolk Druid so she fits the Tribal theme. A great pick for our Druid Tribal.

Cephalid Coliseum has Threshold, Sacrifice this land: Target player draws three cards, then discards three cards. Activate only if seven or more cards are in your graveyard. A nice utility Land that works great in blue graveyard decks.

Finishers/ Surprise /Alternate win conditions

Gilt-Leaf Archdruid is the ultimate finisher for our Druid Tribal as by tapping seven untapped Druids we control we gain control of all lands target player controls. After that hit it’s very hard for any opponent to recover. Moreover, it is a Druid Tribal draw engine, as whenever we cast a Druid spell, we may draw a card. A must-have card for Druid Tribal. Druids can really tame the land(s).

Mightform Harmonizer is an Insect Druid with Landfall – Whenever a land you control enters, double the power of target creature you control until end of turn. A powerful effect that can be a finishing move in a deck like our Druid Tribal where we may have multiple lands enter the battlefield on a single turn. For example, with just two lands entering, Teval can be a 16/16 Flyer. A great addition for our build.

Will of the Sultai as we have mentioned above, is a flexible card that can act either as ramp or as a potential finisher. If we control our commander it can be both. As a finisher, it let us put X +1/+1 counters on target creature, where X is the number of lands we control, while it also gains trample until end of turn. Trully, a top pick for our Druid Tribal.

Infinite Combo

Kheru Goldkeeper + Tortured Existence results in infinite self-discard triggers. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC). Add Teval, the Balanced Scale to the mix and we get infinite Zombie Druid tokens.

Insidious Roots + Tortured Existence + Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler results in infinite ETB, infinite self-discard triggers, infinite tapped creature tokens and infinite +1/+1 counters on Plants we control. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC). Add Teval, the Balanced Scale to the mix and each time we activate Tortured Existence, we’ll get a Plant and Zombie Druid token and both can tap for mana right away with Tyvar in play, so we’ll now have access to infinite mana.

Kheru Goldkeeper + Gravecrawler + Altar of Dementia results in infinite LTB, infinite ETB, infinite sacrifice triggers, infinite death triggers, infinite mill, infinite self-mill and infinite storm count. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC). Add Teval, the Balanced Scale to the mix and we get infinite Zombie Druid tokens.

The Gitrog Monster + Dakmor Salvage results in infinite self-mill and near-infinite self-discard triggers. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC).

Other synergy pieces

Other

Hedron Crab is a staple for mill decks and is a great pick for our Druid Tribal as it has a Landfall ability that we may trigger multiple times with our graveyard recursion strategy and fuel our graveyard.

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant is an excellent Mill payoff, as whenever one or more creature cards are put into our graveyard from our library, we create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token. Whenever Sidisi enters or attacks we mill three cards, so it can easily trigger itself too. A great inclusion to our Druid Tribal.

Tormod, the Desecrator and Desecrated Tomb are great token creators that work wonders in heavy graveyard recursion builds like our Druid Tribal.

Wonder in our graveyard means all our creatures have Flying which is a great evasion for going wide builds like our Druid Tribal.

Avenger of Zendikar is a Landfall strategy staple for a good reason: it can quickly benefit from Landfall and build us a strong board presence. It greatly empowers our Druid Tribal.

Altar of Dementia works wonders in graveyard decks as it is a sacrifice outlet that also let us fuel our graveyard (or mill an opponent if needed). It is a combo material and a top pick for our Druid Tribal.

Crawling Sensation works wonders in green graveyard decks as it help us fill our graveyard by milling two cards at the beginning of our upkeep, while it is a great token producer for our Druid Tribal, as whenever one or more land cards are put into our graveyard from anywhere for the first time each turn, we create a 1/1 green Insect creature token.

Token Creators : 14 cards

Mill / Filling our graveyard synergy: 30 cards

Let’s see some more statistics about our deck. Some important info to care about is the mana curve and the card type distribution, as it can help us understand better our deck and may indicate where there is space for improving it.

Mana Curve

Druid Tribal Mana Curve

The mana curve shows a great spike in position 4. In general the mana curve is more mid-ranged (more drops in 4-5 positions).

Card Type Distribution

Druid Tribal Card Type Distribution

The Druid Tribal Card Type Distribution shows the dominant tribal creature-heavy theme with 38 creatures. All other categories have a smaller presence with Enchantments at 10, Artifacts at 7, Instants at 4, Sorceries at 7 and Planeswalkers at 2. No battles are present for the time.

Of course statistics and comparative analysis are great tools but they don’t always tell the whole truth, since many factors like synergy and combo pieces are hard to be measured numerically. For example in this deck, with Teval, the Balanced Scale, all our graveyard recursion cards can trigger its Zombie Druid token creation and card recycling can prove very powerful and net us great value along with a token army.
