If you like to create a massive army of Zombies and unleash the ruthless undead upon your opponents, then Zombie Tribal is the right deck for you.
I love tribal decks because they combine synergy and flavor and of course power. On top of that you can find many unique cards that support a tribe and can be great budget options as those cards work only on a specific tribal deck and are bad to unplayable to any other deck. That’s why I will try building and presenting a series of decks for all those who share the love for tribal decks.
Zombie is a creature type describing animated corpses. Zombie is a characteristic race for the color black, though through various blocks they have also featured in all other colors. Zombies are normally simply animated and have little to no connection with the soul of the deceased, though some especially powerful necromancers know how to bind the dead to their bodies to create smart zombies (source: MtG Wiki)
Back in 2021, along with the release of Midnight Hunt, came Undead Unleashed, a Dimir () Colored commander deck focused on Zombies. It features some great Zombies and Zombie Tribal support cards. It is a great starting point for building Zombie Tribal. Although you can call it a precon upgrade, my build is more a precon remake than an upgrade so you can start from zero and buy singles. The optimal building option depends on the price and availability of the cards.

Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver is the face commander of the precon and one of the greatest and more popular commanders for Zombie Tribal. He has two powerful abilities: Whenever another Zombie we control dies, if it didn’t have decayed, we create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed (It can’t block. When it attacks, sacrifice it at end of combat). Moreover, at the beginning of our end step, we may sacrifice a Zombie to draw a card. He is powerful because he is a draw engine, a sacrifice outlet and a Zombie token engine that makes our board presence super persistent. A great option for Zombie Tribal!
In our build, apart from the obvious Zombie Tribal synergy, we will focus on sacrifice and graveyard recursion, so that we will take advantage of Wilhelt’s abilities and flood in value.
P.S.: If you like Zombies, you can also check my Esper Zombie Tribal deck
Synergy Diagram

Let’s analyze the main goals of the deck:
- Add the best Zombies. Our priority is to add the ones that have synergy with graveyard recursion, synergy with sacrifice and Zombie Tribal synergy.
- Add Zombie Tribal support. Cards that support Zombie Tribal seem a great choice for our build.
- Add cards that produce Zombie tokens. Since we are trying to build a great Zombie army, cards that produce Zombie tokens are great for our build.
- Add cards that have sacrifice synergy. With Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver we get a decayed 2/2 Zombie for free for each non-decayed Zombie that dies so adding sacrifice outlets and great sacrifice targets can really add up to our expected value.
- Add graveyard recursion cards and cards with graveyard synergy. Zombies are a tribe with strong graveyard synergy so we can choose cards that synergize both with our Zombie Tribal theme and our Graveyard recursion strategy.
- Add cards that synergize with our strategies. To make the best out of our strategies, we can further amplify them by adding cards that support many of our strategies.
For the sake of flavor some of the choices are not optimal, but are (usually budget friendly) alternatives that fit greatly the Zombie Tribal theme.

As we see form the comparative analysis, the rates per category are very good. There in no score below the optimal low average and we see 4 categories that are above the optimal max average. We see a great spike at Graveyard Recursion with 15 cards and that is due to our Sacrifice and Grave Recursion strategies. Board wipes are very low, but we have many potentally repeatable removal effects that cause our opponents to sacrifice creatures or permanents that are neither target removal nor board wipes but usually something in between.
Deck Highlights, synergy and flavor options:
Ramp
Rooftop Storm is just insane in Zombie Tribal. Paying for Zombies we cast, is just overpowered. It is also a combo material. A must-have card for our Zombie Tribal.
Undead Warchief is another insane card for Zombie Tribal. It is both a mana cost reducer (by ) for Zombies and a Zombie Lord, buffing them with +2/+1. A top pick for our build.
Transmogrant Altar is a sacrifice outlet that has great synergy with our Zombie Tribal. By paying ,
and sacrificing a creature, we add
. Zombies with Decay are perfect sacrifice targets as they are going to be sacrificed anyway. Moreover, by paying
,
and sacrificing a creature, we create a 3/3 colorless Zombie artifact creature token at sorcery speed.
Crowded Crypt is a mana rock with potential to become a great Zombie Token producer. It needs some setup, but the payoff is worth it.
Patchwork Banner is one of the best cards for Tribal builds as it combines ramp and tribal support. Being both a mana rock and a Tribal Anthem gives us amazing value for its mana cost. Of course it is a top pick for our Zombie Tribal!
Empty the Laboratory is another ramp spell with sacrifice synergy and one that can get explosive with our build. It has “Sacrifice X Zombies, then reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a number of Zombie creature cards equal to the number of Zombies sacrificed this way. Put those cards onto the battlefield and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order”. In our Zombie Tribal we can sacrifice Zombie Tokens only to get more powerful Zombies and with a bit of luck we can hit something big and turn the scales in our favor.
Target Removal
Flip the Switch is a counterspell with Zombie Tribal synergy. It counters target spell unless its controller pays and it creates a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed. Overcharged Amalgam is a counterspell stick on a 3/3 Zombie Horror creature with the downside that we need to Exploit a creature and the upside that it can target a spell, an activated ability, or a triggered ability. Jwari Disruption counters target spell unless its controller pays
, but it can be used as a Land too, so its flexibility makes it a nice inclusion (given the fact that we needed more target removal options).
Grimgrin, Corpse-Born is a target removal engine, as long as we have enough creatures to feed it. In our Zombie Tribal, that should not be a problem, as our build is both creature-heavy and token-heavy. A great pick for Zombie Tribal and also a flavorful one.
Feed the Swarm is a new staple and fits our deck since it has low mana value and can hit both creatures and enchantments.
Butcher of Malakir works wonders in sacrifice decks and can really shine in our Zombie Tribal. It costs a lot but can have a heavy impact and become a great removal engine as whenever Butcher of Malakir or another creature we control die, each opponent sacrifices a creature. A great utility card.
Cemetery Desecrator is a great card for our build because its abilities trigger both on ETB and death trigger. On ETB it exiles target card from a graveyard and after that it can either remove X counters from target permanent, or target creature an opponent controls gets -X/-X until end of turn, where X is the mana value of the exiled card. It costs a lot but the value we can get from it (and by potentially recurring it) can be huge. A great card for our Zombie Tribal.
Fleshbag Marauder ,Accursed Marauder and Ravenous Rotbelly have high synergy with our build as they offer us removal on ETB, and then they can be sacrificed and be recurred to repeat the process. Ravenous Rotbelly costs more but has higher potential as if we sacrifice 3 Zombies, it becomes almost a mass removal. Great picks for our Zombie Tribal!
Liliana, Dreadhorde General is a powerful Planeswalker that fills many roles in our build. She is a draw engine (on death trigger of creatures we control), at +1 she becomes a Zombie Token creator, at -4 she forces each player to sacrifice two creatures of his/her choice and her ultimate at -9 is a mass removal: Each opponent chooses a permanent they control of each permanent type and sacrifices the rest.
Liliana, Untouched by Death is another powerful Planeswalker that fills many roles in our build. She help us fill our graveyard by milling 3 cards at +1, at -2 she can remove target creature by forcing it to get -X/-X where X is the number of Zombies we control and at -3 she let us cast Zombie spells from our graveyard for that turn. A great pick for our Zombie Tribal.
Board Wipes
Noxious Ghoul has “Whenever this creature or another Zombie enters, all non-Zombie creatures get -1/-1 until end of turn”. In our Esper Zombie Tribal, it can become a repeatable one-sided wipe as we can easily generate Zombie tokens and trigger its ability multiple times in our turn. A top inclusion for any Zombie Tribal.
Zombie Apocalypse apart from being a great mass recursion card, is a Human board wipe. Although too specific, Humans are one of the most prevalent species in Magic, so that can’t be ignored.
Graveyard Recursion
Cursecloth Wrappings is both a Zombie Anthem buffing Zombies with +1/+1 and a graveyard recursion engine. On , it gives target creature card in our graveyard embalm until end of turn. The embalm cost is equal to its mana cost. A great card for our Zombie Tribal.
Zul Ashur, Lich Lord on , let us cast target Zombie creature card from our graveyard. A great recursion engine with build-in protection (Ward-Pay 2 life) which is kinda weak in commander, but still a nice extra.
Zombie Apocalypse is a huge card for our Zombie Tribal. It is a mass graveyard recursion card, returning all Zombie creature cards from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped. A must-have card for our build.
Rise of the Dark Realms is another huge card for our Zombie Tribal. It is a mass graveyard recursion card that returns all creature cards from all graveyards onto the battlefield under our control. Of course it also counts as a finisher and greatly fits our deck theme.
Lost Monarch of Ifnir is a great inclusion for our Zombie Tribal. It has Afflict 3 and gives other Zombies Afflict 3 which punish players that block our Zombies by loosing 3 life for each blocked creature, something that may be a hidden finisher if we have a big Zombie army. Moreover, it is another repeatable recursion engine as it has: “At the beginning of your second main phase, if a player was dealt combat damage by a Zombie this turn, mill three cards, then you may return a creature card from your graveyard to your hand”.
Rot Hulk is a card that gets stronger the more opponents we have, as when it enters, we return up to X target Zombie cards from our graveyard to the battlefield, where X is the number of opponents we have. In a 4-player commander game it may return 4 Zombies which is huge. A great pick for our Zombie Tribal.
The Scarab God is a powerful card that greatly fits our Zombie Tribal. Among others, by paying at instant speed it let us exile target creature card from a graveyard and create a token that’s a copy of it, except it’s a 4/4 black Zombie. Note that it can also steal a card from our opponents’ graveards, so it can also be used as graveyard hate. A top pick for our build.
Liliana, Death’s Majesty is another Liliana Planeswalker that greatly fits our Esper Zombie Tribal. At +1 she becomes a Zombie token producer and let us mill two cards. At -3 she let us return target creature card from our graveyard to the battlefield. Last but not least, her ultimate is an one-sided wipe, destroying all non-Zombie creatures. Great synergy with our build.
As we’ve already analized before, Liliana, Untouched by Death is also another grave recursion tool for our Zombie Tribal.
Death Tyrant is not a Zombie itself, but is an amazing Zombie Token generator, as on death trigger of an attacking creature we control or a blocking creature an opponent controls, we create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token. In addition it has self-recursion by paying , so it can be consistent.
Lord of the Undead is an amazing Zombie Lord as apart from the +1/+1 buff to our Zombies, by paying ,
, we can return target Zombie card from our graveyard to our hand at instant speed. A top card for our Zombie Tribal.
Tomb Tyrant is another great Zombie Lord as apart from the +1/+1 buff to our other Zombies, by paying ,
and sacrificing a creature, we can return a Zombie creature card at random from our graveyard to the battlefield. It needs some setup though, as we can activate that ability only during our turn and only if there are at least three Zombie creature cards in our graveyard, but that doesn’t seem a big problem for our build. A great card for our Zombie Tribal.
Gisa and Geralf on ETB let us Mill four cards, but its second ability is the most important. Once during each of our turns, we may cast a Zombie creature spell from our graveyard. A great card for repeatable graveyard recursion in our Zombie Tribal.
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is insane value for our Zombie Tribal and fits both our Sacrifice and Grave recursion theme, by giving other non-Human creatures we control get +1/+1 and undying. In addition, he has “Whenever a Human deals damage to you, destroy it.” which can’t be ignored since Humans are the most common creature type in Magic.
Unholy Grotto is a Land that let us pay ,
to put target Zombie card from our graveyard on top of our library. A great utility land for our Zombie Tribal!
Port of Karfell is a Land that let us pay ,
to Mill four cards, then return a creature card from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped. A great utility Land for our Zombie Tribal!
Sidisi, Regent of the Mire by and sacrificing a creature we control with mana value X other than Sidisi, let us return target creature card with mana value X plus 1 from our graveyard to the battlefield at sorcery speed. It is a kind of Birthing Pod for graveyard decks and it has no mana cost for activating its ability, so we can get amazing value in decks that play with graveyard strategies, like our Zombie Tribal. A top card for our build.
Graveyard Hate
Bojuka Bog is a staple for graveyard hate.
The Scarab God, Cemetery Desecrator, and Cemetery Reaper help us get rid of big threats from the opponents’ graves, while we get additional benefits.
Tutors
Vile Entomber is a tutor that let us search our library for a card and put that card into our graveyard. A powerful effect for our Zombie Tribal where we have a very potent Graveyard Recursion strategy.
Corpse Harvester is a powerful Zombie tutor and a sacrifice outlet, that provides us with repeatable tutoring: by paying ,
and sacrificing a creature we search our library for a Zombie card and a Swamp card, reveal them and put them into our hand. A top pick for our Zombie Tribal.
Protection
Zombie Master is a great protection card for our Zombies, as it provides them with “: Regenerate this permanent” and Swampwalk. Swampwalk can prove extra deadly against black decks as our Zombies become unblockable which makes it a hidden finisher. A must-have for our Zombie Tribal.
All our counterspells also act as protection spells too if needed and that is very important since with our build focusing on both Zombie Tokens and Zombie creatures we should have a strong board presence.
Accursed Duneyard is a great addition for Shade, Skeleton, Specter, Spirit, Vampire, Wraith, and Zombie Tribal builds. By paying at instant speed it let us regenerate target Zombie. A great protection option for our Zombie Tribal!
Card Draw
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver is our commander and is an amazing card draw engine, even if we need to sacrifice a Zombie at the beginning of our end step. His first ability synergizes with his last, providing us with Zombie Tokens with decayed whenever a Zombie we control dies. A true value engine for our Zombie Tribal.
Midnight Reaper whenever a nontoken creature we control dies, it deals 1 damage to us and we draw a card. Has nice synergy with our Zombie Tribal Sacrifice strategy and can become a draw engine.
Liliana, Dreadhorde General draw us a card whenever a creature we control dies, which works wonders with our Zombie Tribal Sacrifice strategy. She does much more, which we have already analized before on this article.
Hordewing Skaab is a must-have card for our Zombie Tribal as it gives Zombies we control Flying, while at the same time it has: “Whenever one or more Zombies you control deal combat damage to one or more of your opponents, you may draw cards equal to the number of opponents dealt damage this way. If you do, discard that many cards”. A powerful looting effect that is made much easier with Flying.
Archghoul of Thraben on death trigger of a Zombie we control, let us look at the top card of your library. If it’s a Zombie card, we may reveal it and put it into our hand. If we don’t put the card into our hand, you may put it into our graveyard. It synergizes with both our Sacrifice strategy and our Graveyard Recursion Strategy, so it is a great option for our Zombie Tribal.
Undead Augur works wonders in Zombie Tribal as it turns all our Zombie deaths into card draw. A top addition to our build.
Prophet of the Scarab has a powerful ETB, that almost always will net us a big amount of cards as when it enters we draw cards equal to the number of Zombies we control or the number of Zombie cards in our graveyard, whichever is greater. A top pick for our Zombie Tribal.
Cryptbreaker is another repeatable draw source, as by tapping three untapped Zombies we control, we draw a card and lose 1 life. In addition, by paying ,
and discarding a card, it becomes a Zombie token creator. A great addition to our build.
Fell Stinger has Exploit and when this creature exploits a creature, target player draws two cards and loses 2 life. Given the fact that it has Deathtouch and a 3/2 body, it is already decent, but if we can recur it, we can multiply its value. A nice addition to our build.
Liliana’s Standard Bearer has Flash and on ETB, we draw X cards, where X is the number of creatures that died under our control that turn. It can net us a great amount of cards with a proper timing and has synergy with our Sacrifice strategy. A great pick for our Zombie Tribal.
Finishers/ Surprise /Alternate win conditions
Gray Merchant of Asphodel has great synergy with our Zombie Tribal. On ETB, each opponent loses X life, where X is our devotion to black. We gain life equal to the life lost this way. That alone can be a finisher in a deck with high devotion to black, but since it is a Zombie, combined with a duplication effect or simply by recurring it, it can be a nuke. T top pick for our Zombie Tribal.
The Scarab God can become a finisher as long as we have many Zombies, as it has: “At the beginning of your upkeep, each opponent loses X life and you scry X, where X is the number of Zombies you control.” A powerful effect that can quickly drain our opponents.
Rise of the Dark Realms costs a lot of mana, but its effect is so powerful that can even win us the game out of nowhere. We put all creature cards from all graveyards onto the battlefield under our control. An amazing finisher that also greatly fits the flavor of our Zombie Tribal.
Zombie Apocalypse is also a mass graveyard recursion spell that sets up a potential finishing move on the next turn.
Infinite Combo
Gravecrawler + Rooftop Storm + Grimgrin, Corpse-Born results in infinite +1/+1 counters on Grimgrin, infinite ETB, infinite LTB, infinite sacrifice triggers and infinite storm count. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC).
Gravecrawler + Rooftop Storm + Carrion Feeder results in infinite +1/+1 counters on Carrion Feeder, infinite ETB, infinite LTB, infinite sacrifice triggers and infinite storm count. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC).
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver + Poppet Stitcher + Carrion Feeder results in infinite +1/+1 counters on Carrion Feeder, infinite death triggers, infinite ETB, infinite LTB and infinite sacrifice triggers. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC).
Liliana, Untouched by Death + Rooftop Storm + Carrion Feeder results in infinite +1/+1 counters on Carrion Feeder, infinite death triggers, infinite ETB, infinite LTB, infinite sacrifice triggers and infinite storm count. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC).
Necroduality + Rot Hulk + Carrion Feeder results in infinite +1/+1 counters on Carrion Feeder, infinite creature tokens, infinite death triggers, infinite ETB, infinite LTB, infinite sacrifice triggers and returning all Zombies from our graveyard to the battlefield. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC).
Acererak the Archlich + Rooftop Storm results in infinite card draw, infinite draw triggers, near-infinite +1/+1 counters, near-infinite colored mana, near-infinite creature tokens, near-infinite ETB, near-infinite lifegain, near-infinite lifegain triggers, near-infinite lifeloss, near-infinite LTB, near-infinite storm count, near-infinite Treasure tokens, near-infinite ventures into the dungeon. The combo can be explained in detail here (EDHREC). A great 2-card combo finisher!
Other synergy pieces
Great Zombies
Gravecrawler keeps coming back from the grave to haunt our opponents. It works as a great sacrifice target and is a combo material. A great pick for our Zombie Tribal!
Carrion Feeder works as a great sacrifice outlet and is an amazing combo material. A great pick for our Zombie Tribal!
Cleaver Skaab by paying ,
and sacrificing another Zombie, let us create two tokens that are copies of the sacrificed creature. Another great pick for our Zombie Tribal!
Other
Ghoulcaller Gisa is one of the few creatures in our deck that are not Zombies, but has great Zombie synergy. By paying ,
and sacrificing another creature, we create X 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens, where X is the sacrificed creature’s power. We can easily create a Zombie Army out of nowhere. A top pick for our Zombie Tribal.
Endless Ranks of the Dead is a great Zombie Token producer that at the beginning of our upkeep, creates X 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens, where X is half the number of Zombies we control, rounded down. It can easily get out of hand in our Esper Zombie Tribal.
Necroduality on nontoken Zombie ETB, creates a token that’s a copy of that creature, so it doubles our nontoken Zombies which is insane for a Zombie Tribal deck. A top pick for our Esper Zombie Tribal.
Token Creators : 20 cards
Cryptbreaker, Tainted Adversary, Cemetery Reaper, Diregraf Colossus, Headless Rider, Poppet Stitcher, Tormod, the Desecrator, Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver, Death Tyrant, Ghoulcaller Gisa, The Scarab God, Grave Titan, Liliana, Death’s Majesty, Liliana, Dreadhorde General, Flip the Switch, Crowded Crypt, Transmogrant Altar, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Necroduality, Cleaver Skaab
It is worthy to be mentioned, that Tainted Adversary on ETB let us may pay any number of times to put that many +1/+1 counters on Tainted Adversary and create twice that many 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens with decayed. Tormod, the Desecrator synergizes with our Graveyard Recursion strategy, Diregraf Colossus apart from being a great Zombie token creator, it has a powerful ETB, as it gets +1/+1 for each Zombie card in our graveyard. Ghoulcaller Gisa can create an army of Zombies by targeting creatures with high power, The Scarab God create powerful 4/4 black Zombie Tokens that are copies of other creatures, Grave Titan creates two tapped 2/2 black Zombies creature Tokens both on ETB and on attack trigger, Transmogrant Altar as we have analized before is a great ramp source, Cleaver Skaab creates two tokens of a Zombie by sacrificing it and Necroduality double the nontoken Zombies.
Zombie Tribal Lord effects / buffs: 13 cards
Lord of the Accursed by paying ,
also gives all Zombies Menace until end of turn, Death Baron also grants Deathtouch, Tomb Tyrant also acts as a reanimator, Zombie Master grants our Zombies with “
: Regenerate this permanent” and Swampwalk, Lost Monarch of Ifnir grants Afflict 3, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed grants +1/+1 and Undying, Undead Warchief grants +2/+1 and reduces the casting cost of Zombie spells by
and Hordewing Skaab grants Flying.
Let’s see some more statistics about our deck. Some important info to care about is the mana curve and the card type distribution, as it can help us understand better our deck and may indicate where there is space for improving it.
Mana Curve

The mana curve is more mid-ranged than the average mana curve, as we see a lower number of 1-2 drops and a higher number of 3-6 drops with a small spike in position 3.
Card Type Distribution

The Flying Tribal Card Type Distribution shows the dominant tribal creature-heavy theme with 47 creatures. All other categories have a smaller presence with Enchantments at 3, Artifacts at 8, Instants at 2, Sorceries at 4 and Planeswalkers at 3. No Battles are present at the time.
Of course statistics and comparative analysis are great tools but they don’t always tell the whole truth, since many factors like synergy and combo pieces are hard to be measured numerically. For example in this deck, with Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver and the Zombie Tokens with Decayed he creates plus his Sacrifice ability to draw a card, our Sacrifice strategy and and our board presence get much more consistent.
