Eldrazi Titans

Eldrazi Tribal : How to Unleash the Power of the Titans

If you like to play the big bad guys that devour entire planes for breakfast and annihilate your opponents, then Eldrazi tribal is the right deck for you. Let’s see how to unleash the Power of the Titans and bring ultimate destruction!

I love tribal decks because they combine synergy and flavor and of course power. On top of that you can find many unique cards that support a tribe and can be great budget options as those cards work only on a specific tribal deck and are bad to unplayable to any other deck. That’s why I will try building and presenting a series of decks for all those who share the love for tribal decks.

Eldrazi is a creature type describing an ancient race native to the Blind Eternities that have neither physical form nor color alignment. Their nature is ceaseless hunger, so they travel between planes devouring the mana and life energy until the plane’s destruction. Three Eldrazi titans were previously bound on ZendikarEmrakulUlamog, and Kozilek. Emrakul warps biology, Ulamog warps physical properties, and Kozilek warps reality. (source: MtG Wiki)

The Commander Masters Commander Deck Eldrazi Unbound, is a great starting point for building Eldrazi Tribal since it features the first colorless preconstructed Commander deck, focused on Eldrazi and expensive colorless spells theme. Of course, there is plenty of space for upgrades and it needs some work to make it a dedicated Eldrazi Tribal deck. Although you can call this article a precon upgrade, you can start from zero and buy singles. The optimal building option depends on the price and availability of the cards.

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth

There are many powerful Eldrazi that can be our commander, but among them, we choose Kozilek, Butcher of Truth as the optimal choice. Although his mana cost is high at , he is an absolute beast. On cast, we draw four cards and he has Annihilator 4 which means on attack trigger he forces defending player to sacrifice four permanents. That is brutal and combined with the fact that he has a 12/12 body and can two-shot a player with commander damage, makes him a huge threat. Even his last abililty to shaffle our graveyard into our library when he is put into our graveyard, can sometimes prove quite useful, as we can refill our library with very important and powerful spells.

Some believe Kozilek, the Great Distortion is even stronger, as it also offers card draw and has a great defensive ability with “free” counter spells (by discarding a card with the same value). Although both are very strong, Kozilek, Butcher of Truth seems a better choice to me, at least for building Eldrazi Tribal. Kozilek, the Great Distortion feels like he needs a deck with lower mana curve to shine, as most spells of our opponents will probably have lower mana value. Also his card draw is more conditional and can be less effective on multiple casts (turn after turn). He still is a great pick for the 99.

The strategy of our Eldrazi Tribal deck, is simple: Run a great amount of ramp to be able to unleash early our powerful Eldrazi upon our opponents and annihilate them!

Synergy Diagram

Eldrazi Tribal Synergy Diagram

Let’s analyze the main goals of the deck:

  1. Add the best Eldrazi. Our priority is to add the most powerful ones.
  2. Add Eldrazi Tribal support. Cards that support Eldrazi Tribal seem a great choice for our build.
  3. Add a considerable amount of ramp. Since our build is build around Eldrazi, to be able to cast them we need many ramp spells.
  4. Add colorless support cards. Since our deck has colorless identity, we can benefit from some very speficic cards that have synergy with that.
  5. Add big colorless spells. Sine we run a considerable amount of ramp, we can cast spells with much higher mana cost than average and get advantage of it.
  6. Add cards that synergize with our strategies. To make the best out of our strategies, we can further amplify them by adding cards that support many of our strategies.

For the sake of flavor some of the choices are not optimal, but are (usually budget friendly) alternatives that fit greatly the Eldrazi tribal theme.

Eldrazi Tribal Comparative Analysis by category

As we see form the comparative analysis, the rates per category are insane. There is no score below the optimal low average and nearly all categories are above the optimal max average. We see two great spikes, Ramp at 27 and Target Removal at 18, while Card Draw at 15, Protection at 10 and Board Wipes at 9 are also highlights of the deck. Although the numbers seem extremely good, we have to take into consideration that this is a result of many big spells that have very high mana cost so it is normal to be high cost –> high reward. But all that comes at a high risk too, since we much ensure we will be able to cast that high mana cost spells, thus the huge spike on ramp.

The spike on Target Removal is also a result of the Annihilator triggered ability of our Eldrazi (that is not Target Removal, but we count it as such for guide consistency since it is a different kind of removal). For our guide, we count as Target Removal Annihilator 1-3 while Annihilator 4 as a (mini) board wipe. That is not optimal, but we cannot ignore that kind of removal and it would be very confusing to create another category for removal.

Deck Highlights, synergy and flavor options:

Ramp

Eye of Ugin and Eldrazi Temple are simply the best lands for Eldrazi Tribal. Eldrazi Temple makes Eldrazi spells cast less, while Eldrazi Temple produces for Eldrazi spells or abilities. Both are must-have cards for our build.

Conduit of Ruin is a powerful Eldrazi that has great synergy with Eldrazi Tribal. It makes the first creature spell we cast each turn cost less which help us cast our big threats, while on cast trigger it tutors a colorless creature card with or greater to the top of our library. One of the best cards for our build.

Zhulodok, Void Gorger is the face commander of the Eldrazi Unbound precon, but it stills works great in the 99 of our Eldrazi Tribal. With double Cascade for colorless spells we cast from our hand with mana value 7 of greater, we can multiply the value of our big spells and our deck runs a considerable amount of them.

Forsaken Monument is an amazing card for Eldrazi Tribal since all Eldrazi in our build are colorless and cost a lot, so we benefit the most from the +2/+2 buff and the boost. The 2 life on colorless spell cast is a nice bonus.

Ugin, the Ineffable makes our colorless spells we cast cost less which is great for our Eldrazi Tribal build. With his +1 we exile the top card of our library face down and look at it, then we create a 2/2 colorless Spirit creature token. When that token leaves the battlefield, we put the exiled card into our hand. Not an optimal card draw, but still it fits our build since we need small creatures for defence. His -3 let us destroy target permanent that’s one or more colors that is very useful too. Great utility card!

Ugin’s Mastery is our only enchantment but works wonders in our Eldrazi Tribal build. All our creatures are colorless so we can get many manifested cards during play. In addition, most of our Eldrazi have huge stats so the 6 total power prerequisite on attack trigger, is super easy to trigger and we can often ramp a huge threat into the battlefield.

Quicksilver Amulet is another way to “cheat” a huge Eldrazi from our hand into the battlefield. With so many high drops it seems an amazing choice for our build.

Canoptek Wraith is able to fetch 2 basic lands with the same name as a land we control into the battlefield tapped, as long as we sacrifice it and pay after it deals damage to a player. Because it can’t be blocked it is better than it sounds.

Semblance Anvil works wonders in our Eldrazi Tribal build as it practically means it makes our Eldrazi less to cast by exiling an Eldrazi from our hand.

Kozilek’s Channeler  and Warden of Geometries are Eldrazi mana producers so they fit both our Eldrazi Tribal theme and our ramp strategy.

Palladium Myr is great for our Eldrazi Tribal build because of our colorless identity. Adding to our mana pool is great for its mana value.

Geode Golem is great in decks that the commander has very high mana cost so it greatly fits Eldrazi Tribal. If we can cheat Kozilek, Butcher of Truth on play for free, that may prove fatal for our opponents.

Oblivion Sower let us ramp with lands from our opponents. It lacks consistency but given the fact that is is a 5/8 Eldrazi and we can possibly steal and put (on average 1-2)  extra lands onto the battlefield, it makes is a great pick for our build.

Matter Reshaper, on death trigger, let us reveal the top card of our library and put it into play if it is a permanent that has mana value 3 or less, otherwise we put that card into our hand. Nice value and we need good low mana cost Eldrazi.

Darksteel Monolith costs a lot but if it stays in play we can get amazing value out of it. Being Indestructible makes that possible so we can count on it to ramp our Titans for ! It works once each turn but that’s more than enough. It is worth to mention that we can cast our instants on our opponents turns for too, amazing value!

Glaring Fleshraker helps us with ramp as whenever we cast a colorless spell it creates a 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creature token with “Sacrifice this creature: Add. At the same time, on colorless creature ETB, it deals 1 damage to each opponent helping us drain their life. A great pick for any Eldrazi Tribal deck!

It That Heralds the End is a mana reducer ( less) for colorless spells with mana value 7+ while at the same time it is  colorless Creature Lord buffing our Eldrazi with +1/+1. An amazing pick for our Eldrazi Tribal!

Target Removal

Ulamog is one of the three Eldrazi titans. Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger on cast let us exile two target permanents while Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre on cast destroys target permanent. Being Indestructible means both are extra hard to remove and with a 10/10 body they are a serious threat. Even their last ability, altough not relevant to our strategies can prove useful. , Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger can exile the top 20 (!) cards from the library of defending player, meaning that with few attacks we can exile the whole library. Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre when is put into a graveyard from everywhere, it recurs our whole graveyard into our library. Must-have cards for Eldrazi Tribal!

Kozilek, the Great Distortion is our second Kozilek and as mentioned earlier, is also quite powerful. He can also refill our hand and let us cast free counterspells as long as we have a card with the same mana value (as the mana value of the target spell) to discard. With a 12/12 body and Menace he is really one of the best Eldrazi titans around and a possible alternative commander for our build. He is slightly behind Kozilek, Butcher of Truth but really deserves to be called one of the best cards of Eldrazi Tribal.

All Eldrazi with Annihilator 1-3 will be counted for reasons of guide consistency as target removal although they are just a different kind of (potentially repeatable) removal. Pathrazer of Ulamog deserves a special mention as it can’t be blocked except by three or more creatures making it a hidden board wipe/finisher. It That Betrays has both Annihilator 2 and Annihilator synergy as whenever an opponent sacrifices a nontoken permanent, we put that card onto the battlefield under our control. Amazing value! Breaker of Creation is a powerful Eldrazi with Annihilator 2. Although at first glance it seems a bit weak at 4 toughness, having Hexproof from each color makes up for it and actually is an amazing protection. Moreover, on cast we gain 1 life for each colorless permanent we control which can net us a respectable amount of life. A great pick for our Eldrazi Tribal!

Field of Ruin by paying , and sacrificing it, let us destroy target nonbasic land an opponents controls while it lets each player search and put a basic land from their library onto the battlefield.

Desecrate Reality let us exile up to one target permanent with even mana value from each opponent, while at the same time its Adamant ability is very easy to be triggered in our Eldrazi Tribal so usually it recurs from our graveyard a permanent with an odd mana value to the battlefield. It has great synergy with Zhulodok, Void Gorger and with Darksteel Monolith.

Gruesome Slaughter makes all our creatures able to and deal damage equal to their power to target creature. Great in our Eldrazi Tribal since most of our Eldrazi have high power and if we have enough creatures on the battlefield it can be a one sided board wipe.

Warping Wail is a cheap and flexible instant and one of the few colorless counterspells on the game. It only counters sorceries but it can also exile target creature with power or touchness 1 or less, or it can even be used for creation of a 1/1 colorless Eldrazi Scion creature token with “Sacrifice this creature: Add .”

Titan’s Presence Works wonders in our Eldrazi Tribal deck which is full of Eldrazi Titans with overwhelming power, making it usually an istant exile for 3 mana which is exceptional.

Endbringer is a great flexible card as it can be used with for dealing ping damage, with ,to make target creature unable to attack or block this turn and with , to draw a card. Moreover it untaps during each other player’s untap step so all of the above can be used each turn. Great utility card!

Kozilek’s Command is a powerful flexible Eldrizi Tribal spell which helps both in ramp, card draw, target removal and graveyard hate! Its power lies in flexibility and of course it fits perfectly in a Kozilek deck!

Devourer of Destiny has a powerful target removal on cast trigger and on top of that if we have it on our opening hand, it offers us free card filtering which is always very welcome. A top pick for our Eldrazi Tribal!

Board Wipes

All Is Dust is an Eldrazi Tribal Sorcery that is the perfect board wipe for our build since it cannot hit our board but can devastate our opponents. A must-have card that is true to its name!

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth and Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre have Annihilator 4 which is a mini board wipe. Because it procs on attack trigger, it means we need haste to get the most out of it, so Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are perfect equipment for our Titans providing instant attack and protection.

Blast Zone needs some setup and is slow, but a land that can be used as a targeted board wipe can be quite useful.

Calamity of the Titans in Eldrazi Tribal where we have very high mana values on our colorless Eldrazi, can be an excellent wipe that exiles all creatures in cases where we are left behind.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is perfect for our Eldrazi Tribal build. With its +2 it deals 3 damage to target creature or player which is useful for target removal, while with -X it exiles each permanent with mana cost X or less that’s one or more colors. That means it leaves our board intact while devastating colored decks. Amazing board wipe. In addition his ultimate with -10 can be a finisher aswe gain 7 life, draw seven cards and then put seven permanants from our hand onto the battlefild. Can be crazy in Eldrazi Tribal.

Steel Hellkite can be useful for a targeted board wipe, as it has flying and with we destroy each nonland permanent with mana value X whose controller was dealt combat damage by Steel Hellkite this turn.

Graveyard Recursion

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth can recur all our graveyard into our library each time he dies, which is nice for refilling our deck so that we will be able to cast again our best spells. Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre has the same ability.

Artisan of Kozilek, on cast, let us return target creature from our graveyard to the battlefield. In our Eldrazi Tribal, we should have plenty of great targets.

Graveyard Hate

Scavenger Grounds is a staple for graveyard hate.

Tutors

Eye of Ugin by paying , it let us tutor a colorless creature card from our library into our hand. With both ramp and tutoring, it becomes a real Legendary Land for our Eldrazi tribal.

We have already analized above, why Conduit of Ruin is one of the best cards in our deck.

Sanctum of Ugin has synergy with big colorless spells (7 or greater) as whenever we cast such a spell we can sacrifice it and tutor a colorless creature from our library into our hand. Great card for our Eldrazi Tribal!

Protection

Void Winnower is an amazing Eldrazi that makes our opponents unable to cast spells with even converted mana costs. In addition it makes opponents unable to block with creatures with even converted mana costs. It combines great protection and utility, one of the best picks for our Eldrazi Tribal.

Kozilek, the Great Distortion is amazing for protection with free counterspells while Warping Wail counters sorceries and is a great flexible pick, as we have already analized previously on this article.

Tyrite Sanctum let us create an Eldrazi God with indestructible. It needs some work, but the reward is worth it. Great utility for a land!

Reality Smasher has Trample, Haste and self protection with “Whenever Reality Smasher becomes the target of a spell an opponent controls, counter that spell unless its controller discards a card.” It is a great pick for Eldrazi Tribal.

Not of This World is an Eldrazi Tribal Instant that let us counter target spell or ability that targets a permanant we control and its cost is rediced by if that spell targets a creature we control with power 7 or greater, so it’s free for our Eldrazi Titans and our best Eldrazi. Great protection and great synergy with Zhulodok, Void Gorger and with Darksteel Monolith.

Card Draw

As we have already analized before, all Kozilek cards are amazing for drawing cards. Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is our commander and that means we will always have access to dependable card draw. Kozilek, the Broken Reality isn’t as strong as our commander, but another Kozilek is always welcome! It offers us respectable card draw and acts as an amazing colorles Creature Lord buffing our Eldrazi with +3/+2. A great pick for our Eldrazi Tribal!

Arch of Orazca, Bonders’ Enclave, Geier Reach Sanitarium and War Room are our Lands that can help us with card draw. Nice utility.

Mystic Forge is not a typical card draw spell but acts as a card draw engine since in our colorless deck it offers us access to look and cast colorless spells from the top of our library.

Finishers/ Surprise /Alternate win conditions

Rise of the Eldrazi is a very heavy mana cost sorcery but if we cast it, it gives us high reward too, offering target removal, card draw and an extra turn. It can’t be countered which is crucial for such a big spell. It can easily finish games.

Emrakul, the Promised End is one of the three Titans and one of the most powerful ones. It has Flying, Trample and protection from instants combined with a huge 13/13 body so it is a huge threat that is hard to block and to be removed. On cast trigger, it let us take control of target opponent during that player’s next turn which can easily finish games. If somehow that player survives, the turn is refunded, but usually even then, it will be hard to recover. She can even be cast for a reduced cost as she costs less to cast for each card type among cards in our graveyard. A must-have for any Eldrazi Tribal deck.

Flayer of Loyalties is a heavy mana cost spell but can also have high gravity in our game. The fact that we can steal target creature until end of turn, untap it and make it a 10/10 with Trample, Annihilator 2 and Haste, is insane as it can easily hit hard. Moreover, it has a body of 10/10 with Trample and Annihilator 2 so it is a huge threat by itself. If we have a way to give it haste, we can have 2 10/10 tramplers attack and annihitale 4. Amazing value!

Ulamog, the Defiler is insane! It exiles half the library of target opponent on cast trigger and gets X +1/+1 counters and Annihilator X where X is the greatest mana value among the exiled cards. As if those weren’t enough it has Ward-Sacrifice two permanents. A true terror for any opponent and a top pick for any Eldrazi Tribal deck.

Emrakul, the World Anew is a real nuke. On cast trigger we take control af all creatures target player controls! We have to be careful though as when it leaves the battlefild it backfires causing us to sacrifice all creatures we control. Ideally it sets an OTK as it has a huge 12/12 body, Flying and protection from spells and from permanents that were cast this turn, meaning that with haste it can deliver a massive hit while being immune to almost everything. In addition it has madness- six. Paying just that cost for Emarkul is madness indeed! In my opinion it is more of a game changer card, it is optimal if we are behind but it is too bit risky if we are ahead. A trully powerful card and a top pick for our Eldrazi Tribal!

Other synergy pieces

Great Eldrazi

Eldrazi Mimic is a cheap eldrazi that can mimic a Titan! It can become a huge threat all the time since our Eldrazi Tribal is full of big Eldrazi! Cool card!

Deceiver of Form can be devastating on our Eldrazi Tribal since at the beginning of combat on our turn we may choose to have creatures we control become copies of the top card of our library until end of turn. Needless to say, if we hit a big Eldrazi, we can finish the game with a memorable attack. Cool utility!

Breaker of Armies is a big threat that has a lure ability. That can either prove fatal to the army of our opponent or can lure all blockers and open the way for our bigger threats to hit face. A win/win case for us. A card that greatly fits Eldrazi Tribal.

Other

Liberator, Urza’s Battlethopter is an amazing utility card as it let us cast colorless spells (all our deck) as though they had flash. It becomes a nuke paired with Darksteel Monolith. The fact that it can also evolve into a threat by playing bigger power spells paired with flying is a nice bonus. Skittering Cicada has similar utility but instead of slowly evolving, it gets  trample and +X/+X where X is the mana value of the spell we cast, so it can become a huge threat from out of nowhere.

Abstruse Archaic is an ability doubler that works great in our Eldrazi Tribal that has colorless identity. Paying , to copy a powerful activated or triggered ability of an Eldrazi always provide us with great value.

Echoes of Eternity is an Eldrazi Tribal (now renamed Kindred) Enchantment that is a colorless spell doubler and a colorless triggered ability doubler. Of course it is one of the best cards for our build. Mirrorpool can also copy instants, sorceries and creatures we control by sacrificing and paying some mana, which is also great in Eldrazi Tribal where he have many high cost, high reward cards. The Mycosynth Gardens by paying can copy any artifact we control with mana value X and in our build we have many powerful artifacts (mostly for mana production but also utility ones).

Spawning Bed is providing us blockers and a way to sustain mana to cast later greater threats. We have to pay , and sacrifice it though, which is not optimal, but the flexibility and the fact that it is a land make it an excellent choice for Eldrazi Tribal.

Urza’s Lands

Urza’s lands have synergy with themselves, Urza’s Workshop is producing for each Urza’s land we have in play, while if we control together Urza’s Mine, Urza’s Power Plant and Urza’s Tower they increace their production. Urza’s Cave by paying , and sacrificing it, tutors any land onto the battlefield tapped. We need all the mana we can get for casting our Eldrazi, so Urza’s lands are great lands with no drawback for our colorless deck.

Let’s see some more statistics about our deck. Some important info to care about is the mana curve and the card type distribution, as it can help us understand better our deck and may indicate where there is space for improving it.

Mana Curve

Eldrazi Tribal Mana Curve

The mana curve is totally abnormal and that’s no surprise since Eldrazi are the biggest guys around and that comes with a cost. A high mana cost. That’s why we run 27 (!) ramp cards that would be overkill in any other deck, but we need all the ramp we can get to be able to cast our 8+ spells.

Card Type Distribution

Eldrazi Tribal Card Type Distribution

The Eldrazi Tribal Card Type Distribution shows the dominant tribal creature-heavy theme with 35 creatures. Artifacts at 15 are also an important part of our build as they are mostly ramp and utility cards. All other categories have a much smaller presence with Instants at 5, Sorceries at 4, Enchantments at 2, and Planeswalkers at 2. No Battles are present for the time.

Of course statistics and comparative analysis are great tools but they don’t always tell the whole truth, since many factors like synergy and combo pieces are hard to be measured numerically. For example in this deck, with Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, we have access to mass card draw and mass removal from our commander, while most of the Eldrazi can act as finishers dealing massive damage so the potential finishers are much more than the statistics number shown.

  1. Thanks for your awesome guides. I recently discovered them and I’m loving your explanations with numbers and breakdowns and it’s all very informative and helpful. However, I do feel it’s worth mentioning that lands are regarded as colourless permanents (except for special ones like Dryad Arbor), and as such would NOT be affected by All is Dust. Under your Board Wipes section, you made a note that lands are permanents too and so the opponent would be truly devastated after All is Dust, but actually this is not true. The lands would remain.

    1. You’re welcome and thank you very much for your comment. I’m really honored that you like my guides. Of course you are right about All is Dust interaction with Lands. They are indeed not affected so I’ve updated the article removing that part. Thank you once again, I really appreciate both your support and your help to become better!
